Traveling to Matetsi and Gwayi

Hunters need to fly into Zimbabwe’s Victoria Falls Airport, where Mike will meet you. A short (about 77 miles) road transfer will take you to the hunting grounds.

Zimbabwe is easily accessible via a 1h45 flight from OR Tambo International in South Africa. Various regional airlines are available, such as Safair, Cemair, Airlink, and South African Airways.

The Hunting Concessions

This Leopard safari occurs in the Matetsi and Gwayi Forest regions, where both areas produce high-quality trophies. The hunting concessions are near Hwange National Park, an area known for its large Leopard populations. Additionally, Western Zimbabwe produces sizable Leopards, so you can expect an exceptional trophy!

The Matesti East RFC lies within the greater Matetsi ECA hunting region. Known for the quality hunting experiences with conservation playing a major role, the area is characterized by mopane woodlands, open grasslands, and dense vegetation along rivers.

The rich, diverse wildlife includes large and dangerous game, such as Lions, Leopards, Sables, Elephants, and Cape Buffalo.

The Gwayi Forest boasts a combination of dense forest cover and an abundance of prey species, including various antelope species. The area’s varied terrain offers Leopards ample opportunity for ambush hunting, making it a sought-after location for hunters targeting this big African cat.

Hunting Lodge and Accomodation

Experience a true African safari, staying in luxury tented accommodation.  From comfortable beds, warm showers, and all the comforts of home, hunters can relax and unwind after a busy day hunting.

This picturesque accommodation allows the hunter to really immerse himself in the bush, with the call of the wild and the starry African skies bringing this adventure to life.

Enjoy freshly prepared meals in the large lapa area. Be sure to request some game meat (venison) from recent hunts – this is very tasty and can be prepared in several ways, including braai (BBQ), stews, roasts, and even biltong or droewors (dried sausage).

Tips on a Leopard Hunt

Here are some tips to help ensure a successful Leopard hunting safari:

  • Do your homework. Read up about Leopard behavior, learn about hunting methods used on this dangerous African cat, and local rules and regulations about Leopard hunting in Zimbabwe
  • Hunting Leopards in Africa requires a minimum caliber of .375 with a 300-grain bullet. An expanding bullet tip is recommended. The rifle should be fitted with an excellent-quality tactical scope when hunting this exceptionally dangerous species
  • As a follow-on to rifle requirements, a reminder that accurate shot placement is critical. A wounded Leopard is one of the most dangerous animals to face, and will defend itself to the death
  • Leopards are most active at dusk or night
  • Wear camouflage clothing as well as insect repellent, as there are many bugs and insects during the warmer summer months
  • The best time to enjoy Leopard hunting in Zimbabwe is during the cooler months when there is increased visibility with less dense vegetation and reduced rainfall. The Leopards are more active, and conditions are more comfortable
