Targeting The Forest Buffalo In Africa

The black rhino is known for its adaptability to various environments, with a diet that includes a wide range of vegetation.

FOREST BUFFALO HUNTING (DWARF)

Forest Buffalo, often referred to as the Dwarf Buffalo, offers one of the most challenging and rewarding hunting experiences in Central and West Africa. Smaller but far more unpredictable than their Cape Buffalo relatives, these elusive animals inhabit some of the continent’s most untouched and dense rainforests. At WildLux Safari, our Forest Buffalo hunts are crafted for adventurous hunters who seek a rare, intense, and deeply authentic pursuit in the heart of Africa’s wild jungles.

Unlike the Cape Buffalo, the Forest Buffalo is a secretive and solitary species. Their deep reddish coat, compact build, and preference for thick undergrowth allow them to disappear almost instantly into the shadows of the forest. Their habitat—characterized by tangled vines, towering trees, swamps, and dimly lit terrain—creates an environment where visibility is limited and tracking becomes a true test of instinct and patience. This makes the hunt both thrilling and humbling, demanding sharp senses, controlled movement, and experienced guidance.

A Forest Buffalo hunt begins at first light, when the jungle is alive with sounds and scent trails are fresh. Our professional hunters work alongside expert pygmy trackers and local forest specialists who understand every nuance of the terrain. Tracking is done entirely on foot, often through wet, uneven ground, following subtle signs such as broken vegetation, feeding traces, or the faint imprint of a hoof in soft soil.

Once a mature bull is successfully taken, our skilled skinners and field staff immediately begin trophy preparation, ensuring the cape, horns, and hide are handled with meticulous care. Given the humid environment, proper field treatment is essential, and our team is trained to preserve trophies under even the toughest jungle conditions. Export documentation and logistics are fully managed by our safari staff for a smooth and professional process.

Size and Appearance

The forest buffalo is a smaller specimen than the Cape buffalo and adult males can weigh just over 700 pounds and stand around 39-51 inches at the shoulder. They have a distinctive cattle-like appearance but are not as large, with a hump on their backs, broad chests, and muscular legs. Both males and females of the species have horns, but they are shorter than those of the other subspecies and tend to curve upwards, making an almost “U” shape. They have a reddish-brown coat.
